Our History

Our amazing adult leader and volunteers of troop 7102 will prepare every eligible youth that joins our unit to become a responsible, participating citizen and leader who is guided by the Scout Oath and Law. scouting

Our History

Troop 7102 has been around for 71 years beginning in 1921 in Huntsville, AL. Accumulating 71 eagle scouts to pass through our troop 2nd highest in the region. One of the first black troops to establish in Greater Council of North Alabama.

Our Mission

Our Mission

The mission of Troop 7102 is to bring the scouting experience to youth in urban areas in order to help prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices. Throughout their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

Becoming an Eagle Scout in 1944 allowed Verdery Roberson to find direction in life and break color barriers in Augusta. "I was a 17-year-old youngster and it sort of got me started off in life," he said. "It was a good start." Roberson, who was born and raised in Augusta, is celebrating his 75th anniversary since becoming Augusta's first 

Becoming an Eagle Scout in 1944 allowed Verdery Roberson to find direction in life and break color barriers in Augusta. "I was a 17-year-old youngster and it sort of got me started off in life," he said. "It was a good start." Roberson, who was born and raised in Augusta, is celebrating his 75th anniversary since becoming Augusta's first black Eagle Scout and one of the first in the state in. He attended Paine College and worked at the Augusta Arsenal until it was closed. He was transferred to Alabama, where he currently lives in Birmingham. Roberson used to go to the YMCA on 9th Street to meet for the Eagles Scouts. He became an Eagle Scout when he was 17, which had a big impact in his life moving forward. Daniel Rogers, Scout Executive for the Georgia Carolina Council, said they are proud to have been a part of Roberson's story as an Eagle Scout. "We are extremely proud of him," Rogers said. "We are just honored to be a part of his life and his legacy. It's just a wonderful story to celebrate 75 years later."

Background:   Troop 102 is searching for a Scoutmaster who is spiritually inspired and motivated to work with youth ages 11-18 by bringing the scouting program into their lives and the lives of their families.  Troop 102 is a longstanding member of the Talakto District within the Greater Alabama Council (GAC).  Troop 102 has its origins in the 1940’s and has been positively impacting the lives of local youth through supervised, structured youth ministry ever since.  During that time span, 81 scouts have earned BSA’s highest rank of Eagle Scout.  The troop’s current chartering organization is First Missionary Baptist Church in Huntsville, AL.

Position Description: The Scoutmaster will lead the troop in planning and executing Boy Scouts of America (BSA) related activities.  The Scoutmaster will attend and participate in GAC, Talakto District, and Urban Emphasis Scout Leaders Council (UESLC) activities.  The Scoutmaster will be familiar with and cognizant of BSA rules and procedures along with Chartering Organization guidelines to ensure they are followed. The Scoutmaster will ensure all scouts receive the training required to advance to the highest levels of rank achievement offered by BSA.  The Scoutmaster will work to partner with the Troop Committee to form a unified approach to bringing the scouting program to all youth (including the underserved) in the community.  The Scoutmaster will foster a caring spirit towards the youth, adult leaders, and families that comprise Troop 102.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Active BSA Youth Protection Training certificate
  • Registered BSA adult leader (volunteer) 

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Previous or current scouting experience as a youth and/or adult leader
  • Previous or current experience working with youth in either church, school, or extracurricular activities
  • Willingness to undergo Scouting USA sponsored Scoutmaster training
  • Willingness to devote the time required, on a weekly basis, to lead troop activities
  • Have a passion for ministering and mentoring to youth
  • Willingness to participate in Low Impact and Long Term camping with the troop
  • Proof of receiving COVID-19 vaccination (or willingness to obtain COVID-19 vaccination prior to accepting position)
  • Willingness to submit to the BSA Physical Fitness examination
